150 for most purposes. Use 300 if the image is going to print, and 72 if it is only ever going on screen and file size matters.

Choosing a resolution

72 DPI matches the PDF's own units and suits the screen. 150 prints acceptably. 300 is print quality and produces files several times larger. An A4 page at 300 DPI is roughly 35 MB of canvas before compression.

Scanned and CJK documents render properly

The character maps, base fonts and the JBIG2 and JPEG2000 decoders are all shipped with the site. Without them a scan renders as blanks and CJK text as empty boxes, which is the usual failure of a stripped-down PDF renderer.
