What size should a picture be for a website?

Roughly twice the space it will occupy on the page, so it stays sharp on a high density screen, and rarely more than about 2000 pixels on the longest edge unless people are meant to zoom in.

Does resizing lose quality?

Making a picture smaller discards pixels, which is a real loss but usually an invisible one at the smaller size. Making it larger loses nothing but gains nothing either. Keep the original if you may need a different size later.

Good to know

Making a picture larger cannot add detail

Enlarging invents pixels by averaging the ones either side of them, so the result is the size you asked for but no sharper than the original. It is worth doing when something must physically fill a space, and worth avoiding when you are hoping to recover detail that was never captured.

The proportions lock derives, rather than nudges

With the lock on, typing a width computes the height from the original ratio rather than from the rounded number in the other box. Deriving each side from the source is what stops the two drifting apart over a dozen small edits.

Smaller pixels are not the same as a smaller file

Halving the dimensions removes three quarters of the pixels, but the file size also depends on the format and its quality setting. A large photograph saved as a lossless format can still be bigger than a modest one saved as JPEG.
