Why does my photo already look sideways before I touch anything?

Cameras often record the picture the way the sensor saw it and add a note saying which way up it belongs. That note is read here and applied, so what you see is already the right way up.

How much of the picture does straightening cost?

Very little at small angles. Levelling a horizon by two degrees keeps around 95 per cent of each side. The loss grows quickly past about ten degrees.

Good to know

Quarter turns are exact, other angles are not

Turning by 90 or 180 degrees moves whole pixels to whole pixels, so nothing is resampled and nothing softens. Any other angle has to blend neighbouring pixels, which costs a little sharpness. Straightening is usually worth that cost; turning a picture 45 degrees for fun is not.

An angled turn leaves empty corners

Rotating a rectangle by anything other than a quarter turn leaves four triangular gaps. Trimming cuts back to the largest rectangle that is entirely picture, which is what you want when levelling a horizon. Turn it off and the gaps are kept and filled, transparently where the format allows it.
