Drop audio files onto a track, or press Add files. Drag a clip to move it and drag its edges to trim. Overlap two clips on one track to crossfade them, and drag the dots on a clip's corners to fade it. Drop a clip below the last track for a new one. Ctrl + wheel or pinch zooms, Shift + wheel pans, F fits everything. Space plays, Delete removes the selected clip, arrow keys nudge it. 0:00 of audio loaded, of up to 20:00.

About this tool

Cuts, joins and layers audio on a multi-track timeline, then writes the result in the format you choose. Drop in the files, trim each clip to the part you want, place them one after another or overlap them on separate tracks, fade the joins, and listen to the whole thing before you export. The mixing happens in your browser's own audio engine, so what you hear in the preview is exactly what is written to the file.

How to use it

  1. 1Drop audio files onto a track, or press Add files. Each becomes a clip, placed after the last.
  2. 2Drag a clip to move it and drag its edges to trim it. Drop a clip onto another track to layer it over what is there.
  3. 3Drag a clip back over the end of the one before it to crossfade them; the overlap is the crossfade. Drag the dots on a clip's corners to fade it in or out, and select it to set its gain.
  4. 4Press Play to hear the mix, set a fade in or out for the whole result, then pick a format and export.

Good to know

The preview is the export

Most editors preview one way and render another, and the two drift. Here the same plan schedules both: the Web Audio engine that plays the timeline through your speakers is the engine that renders it to a file, window by window, when you export. FFmpeg is only asked to encode the finished mix into MP3, Opus or whatever you chose, and a WAV export does not need it at all. The file is read into memory by your own browser and processed there, so it is never uploaded and never reaches a server.

Crossfades hold their level

A crossfade fades one clip out while the next fades in. Done with straight lines the middle of the overlap dips by half, which is the hole you hear in an amateur mix. These use equal-power curves, whose combined loudness stays constant across the overlap, and the same curves drive every fade in and fade out.

Files the browser cannot decode are converted first

MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC and AIFF decode in every browser and load in a moment. WMA, AC-3, MP2, WavPack and AMR do not, and Safari also declines Ogg and Opus, so those are first turned into WAV by the same FFmpeg engine the Audio Converter uses. That means a 30 MB download the first time, and a short wait before the clip appears.

There is a limit, and it is memory

Decoded audio is large: about 21 MB for every minute of stereo. The editor holds up to twenty minutes of decoded audio across all the files you load, and exports a mix of up to twenty minutes, which keeps a laptop comfortable and a phone alive. For a longer file, trim it in the Audio Converter first and bring the part you need.
