About this tool
Opens a ZIP, 7z, RAR, tar, tar.gz, tar.bz2 or tar.xz in your browser and shows you what is inside, so you can save one file, a few, or all of them without installing an unarchiver. The engine is 7-Zip compiled to WebAssembly: it reads everything 7-Zip reads, including every RAR version and archives with passwords, and it reads the archive straight from the file you dropped, so listing a large one costs nothing. A file taken out can go straight to another tool: an image to the image tools, a PDF to the PDF tools. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use it
- 1Drop the archive. Its files are listed with their sizes; an encrypted one asks for the password.
- 2Save a single file from its row, or tick the ones you want and press Extract to bring them onto the page, where each can be saved or sent to another tool.
- 3Download selected saves one file as itself and several as a ZIP, since a browser saves one file per click.
Good to know
Every RAR, including the new ones
7-Zip carries decoders for RAR versions 1 through 5, so a RAR5 from a current WinRAR opens as readily as an old one. Password-protected RARs open with the password; a RAR whose file names are encrypted too asks before it can list anything. Multi-part RARs, split across several files, are the one shape that cannot be dropped as one.
What comes out, and where
Extracted files stay in the tab until you save them; the browser cannot write a folder to your disk, so each file is a download, and several at once become a ZIP. Paths inside the archive are kept in the ZIP and shown beside each file. Up to 500 MB of unpacked files can be held at once; untick some for a larger archive and take them in rounds.
Old ZIPs and their names
A ZIP made by an old Windows tool stores names in the machine's own code page rather than Unicode, and there is no locale in the browser to guess it, so accented names from such a file can show as symbols. The files themselves are intact; rename them after saving. The file is read into memory by your own browser and processed there, so it is never uploaded and never reaches a server.
