About this tool

Turns a picture made of pixels into an SVG made of shapes, in your browser. The tracer reduces the picture to a handful of colours, walks the outline of every region of each one and fits lines and curves to it, which is exactly how a logo, an icon or a piece of clip art was drawn in the first place. The result scales to a billboard without a jagged edge, opens in Illustrator, Inkscape and Figma as editable paths, and is usually smaller than the PNG it came from.

How to use it

  1. 1Drop a logo, icon or drawing, or paste one from the clipboard. It is traced straight away with the Logo style.
  2. 2Pick a style, then move Colours and Detail until the SVG on the right looks right. Fewer colours and less detail make a cleaner, smaller file.
  3. 3Press Trace, then download the SVG or send it to the SVG converter for a PNG at any size.

Good to know

Logos trace; photographs posterise

Tracing describes flat regions of colour with edges between them. A logo, an icon, a signature or a line drawing is made of exactly that, and comes out clean. A photograph is made of gradients, and quantising it to sixteen colours turns skin and sky into stepped blotches: that is the Poster style, and it is an effect rather than a conversion. There is no tool, here or anywhere, that turns a photo into a faithful vector; the pixels are the picture.

Traced at a thousand pixels

Pictures over 1024 pixels on the longer edge are reduced before tracing. The tracer's time and the SVG's size grow with the pixel count, while the shapes in a logo do not: a 4000-pixel export of a logo has the same six shapes as a 1000-pixel one, and the SVG that comes out scales to any size regardless. A tiny icon is traced at its own size, since enlarging it would trace its blur.

Transparency

A PNG with a transparent background is flattened onto white before tracing, because the tracer has no notion of alpha. In the colour styles the white becomes an ordinary region you can delete in any vector editor; in Black and white it is dropped, so a stamp or a signature comes out as black shapes on nothing. The file is read into memory by your own browser and processed there, so it is never uploaded and never reaches a server.
